Prepared for a Fire in Your Home?

James Rode

A residential house fire is one of the most devastating and traumatic experiences, and this is the time of the year when we see a lot of them. Develop fire-safe habits for prevention and make sure your family is prepared. If you do experience a fire, consider hiring a public adjuster to help you through the complicated insurance claims process.

Develop Fire-Safe Habits

There are steps you can take to prevent a fire in your home. These include:

  • Having your heating sources in good working order. Many house fires are started by poorly maintained furnaces and chimneys.

  • Keeping items that can catch on fire at least three feet away from anything that gets hot such as a space heater.

  • Turning off portable heaters when you leave the room or go to bed.

  • Avoid overloading outlets and extension cords.

  • Never leaving a burning candle unattended.

Be Prepared

Make sure you are prepared for a house fire. Test your home’s smoke alarms once a month and replace the batteries at least once a year. Teach your children what the smoke alarms sound like and what to do if they hear them go off. Have an escape plan. Your family should know two ways to escape from every room in your house and designate a meeting spot outside of your home.

Hire a Public Adjuster

Dealing with the aftermath of a house fire is overwhelming. There are many decisions to be made and homeowners often have many questions. Where do we stay? What is the extent of the damage and what is covered? How do we start cleaning up the mess? Needless to say the process is complex and fire insurance claims are rarely as straightforward as they seem. If you find yourself the victim of a fire, it is in your best interest to consider hiring a reputable public adjuster that is qualified to handle residential fire claim.

Even though fire and smoke damage is one of the most common causes of property damage, navigating the insurance claims process is still complicated. Experienced public adjusters manage all aspects of your insurance claim to make the process less overwhelming for you. They have the expertise needed to determine the scope of your loss and the best way to move forward to help you achieve the best settlement. Public adjusters also help you secure or recover proceeds for necessary living expenses while you are displaced from your home. Expenses such as temporary living accommodations are likely covered under your insurance policy.

Having a licensed public insurance adjuster on your side every step of the way should allow you to focus on your family’s well-being and make a full financial recovery.
